TECNALIA is working alongside Bilbao City Council on developing new mobility tools that will allow the creation of healthier, friendlier and more accessible spaces. We have designed two types of smart, electric vehicles: the first of these would be used to deliver parcels and the second to transport people with reduced mobility.
Both quadricycles have a pioneering driving support system. They are equipped with a 3D sensor and a system that analyses the data received from the surroundings in order to detect obstacles and warn of possible collisions; limit speeds in pedestrian areas or if people are detected nearby; analyse the driving style and report whether it is rough or smooth; and lastly, to automatically activate signals, such as indicators and brake lights. Making Zorrotzaurre the 'Manhattan of Bilbao'

In the 90s, Bilbao had an urban makeover. The Spanish Basque country’s economic capital is now trying something else: it’s looking to improve entrepreneurial competitiveness to meet the challenges of the digital economy.
How is it doing this?
It has created the BETA 2 in Zorrotzaurre, an old industrial zone under rehabilitation which is often referred to as the Manhattan of Bilbao. Beta 2 is a cyber-factory there. The building is the physical manifestation of a European project called AS Fabrik, which aims to promote the inter-connectivity of start-ups, the training of specialists and improving production.
