this american morning. good morning. zogood morning alina. it s early. it is early. not so early for you. always great to have you here. carol is off, christine is off. that s right. we ve got you back, which is fantastic. we ve got a really serious situation going on in texas. it s it seems to be getting worse although in some parts getting a little more control over it. these raging wildfires we re telling you about sweeping across the country right now. the governor rick perry is describing the disaster as, quote, a monstrous storm of smoke and flames. the flames are sending thousands of people running for their lives, showing no mercy. it s killed four people. hundreds of firefighters are on the frontlines dousing some of the fires, new ones, they re starting new ones hoping to get rid of the bone dry bub brush that goes up in an instant. this is what s left of a ranch in austin, texas. a pile of twisted metal and ash. the texas forest serv ....

good morning. i m ali velshi joining us live from new york. let s start with the fast and furious wildfires wrecking land and property in texas. they ve killed four people and destroyed more than 700 homes in the past few days. the biggest fire is just outside austin. firefighters have been struggling to contain it. let s go right to cnn s chris welch. what s the latest? reporter: well, you just mentioned four death so is far at this point associated with these fires. two of those came from here in bass rtrop county. we assume they occurred yesterday. we don t know for sure because officials aren t providing more details. what we do know is this morning search crews will finally be going in for the first time over the past three days, look for anymore fatalities, look for any bodies. they hope obviously that they don t find anymore, but these fires have been very massive. we re talking these fires are 30% contained. that honestly is a big step from what we ve seen in ....

heading back to washington, d.c. a day ahead of schedule. earlier he called irene a historic storm. i cannot stress this highly enough. if you are in the projected path of the hurricane, you have to take precautions now. don t wait. don t delay. we all hope for the best but have to be prepared for the worst. irene is on track to follow the northeast corridor right up to new england and beyond. cnn is there. reynold wolf is in new jersey, and athena jones is in annapolis, maryland. we will start here in the weather center with cnn meteorologist, chad meyers. chad, give us an idea of where irene is now. not too much changed overnight. the storm did get a little stronger, and as it got stronger, you could see the eye. at 2:00 in the morning, you could truly see the eye. now we don t see it anymore. that tells me the storm is being torn up by a little bit of sheer. it s still a 105-mile-per-hour storm. it will not say category 3 or 4 anymore, but don t let your guard ....
