The Tremé Creole Gumbo and Congo Square Rhythms festivals sit on the outskirts of the French Quarter in Treme, celebrating the neighborhood as a key proving ground in the birthplace of jazz. The Backstreet Cultural Museum presents the 23rd annual All Saints' Day Commemoration on Tuesday, November 1 at Broadside (600 N. Broad St.). Free entry. This year's honorees include Big Chief Ray "Hatchet" Blazio of the Wild Apache, Big CHief Keelian "Dump" Boyd of the Young Maasai Hunters, Deborah "Big Red" Cotton, and Big Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas.
At sunset on March 19, the Black Masking Indians of New Orleans don their elaborate suits of beads and feathers in neighborhoods throughout New Orleans and play out ritual confrontations with song and dance. Below is video from St. Joseph's Night 2019, as multiple tribes met in the 7th Ward. Among those shown are Big Chief Kevin Goodman of the Flaming Arrows, Big Chief Dump of the Young Maasai Hunters, and members of the 7th Ward Hunters.
