Finnish Pavilion Presents the Country's History of Prefabricated Wooden Houses at the 2021 Venice Biennale

Established in 1940 as a response to the Karelian refugee crisis in which 11% of the Finnish population was displaced by war, the Puutalo Oy company soon became the largest manufacturer of prefabricated buildings in the world. The national crisis proved to be a catalyst for innovation, as architects and engineers came together to envision an economical and fast way of building that would not compromise on quality and living standards. In a country ere forests make up more than 76% of the land area, the manufacturing company made use of the country s most abundant natural resources. The Puutalo elements were created in a distributed network of factories and delivered in packages ready to be assembled. ....

Swiss Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale Explores the Political and Social Implications of the Country's Border


Oræ -Experiences on the Border, (
oræ, Latin for “borders”) the Swiss contribution to the 17th Venice Biennale explores the spatial and political dimension of the country’s border, investigating the social implications of this inhabited territory. Created by a Geneva-based team of architects and artists comprising Mounir Ayoub and Vanessa Lacaille from
Laboratoire d’architecture, as well as filmmaker Fabrice Aragno and artist sculptor Pierre Szczepanski, the exhibition details a series of participative processes performed along the Swiss border that investigate the frontier and its inhabitants, revealing the poetic character of the space.
The project debuted at the end of 2019, when the team entrusted with the exhibition travelled along the Swiss border, meeting its inhabitants and inviting them to imagine a place of their choice at the frontier. “Little by little, relations replace measures, and references change. The Slovenian Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale Explores the Social Infrastructure of Local Cooperative Centres

A central space for the community, the cooperative centre is a local multipurpose public building, serving as a venue for various economic, social and cultural activities. The typology of the cooperative centre emerged during the post-war reconstruction and modernisation process and was designed to serve the needs of the new cooperative agriculture model. In 1947, Yugoslavia launched an extensive program that saw the creation of thousands of cooperative centres across its territory within five years. In Slovenia, part of Yugoslavia until 1991, more than 300 cooperative centres were built. The Slovenian exhibition highlights this historical project and its implication, as well as the significance of the cooperative centre typology today. ....

Lina Bo Bardi Wins Special Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Memoriam

Lina Bo Bardi, one of the most important architects of Brazilian architecture, was selected as the recipient of the Special Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement
in memoriam of the Venice Biennale 2021 (also known as the Biennale Architettura 2021), which will open to the public on Saturday, May 22nd, 2021.
Recommended by Hashim Sarkis, curator of the Biennale Architettura 2021, and later approved by the Board of Directors of La Biennale di Venezia, Lina Bo Bardi has been praised by Sarkis on the following statement:
If there is one architect who embodies most fittingly the theme of the Biennale Architettura 2021, it is Lina Bo Bardi. Her career as a designer, editor, curator, and activist reminds us of the role of the architect as convener and importantly, as the builder of collective visions. Lina Bo Bardi also exemplifies the perseverance of the architect in difficult times whether wars, political strife, or immigration, and her ability to remain creative, ....
