Blinken speaks with Israeli counterpart amid escalating conflict

The State Department said in a readout of the call with Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi that Blinken “expressed his concerns regarding rocket attacks on Israel and his condolences for the lives lost as a result.”
“The Secretary and the Foreign Minister also discussed the violence in Jerusalem, in particular on the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount and in Sheikh Jarrah. The Secretary reiterated his call on all parties to deescalate tensions and bring a halt to the violence, which has claimed the lives of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, including children. The Secretary emphasized the need for Israelis and Palestinians to be able to live in safety and security, as well as enjoy equal measures of freedom, security, prosperity, and democracy,” the readout continued.  ....

Feds eye more oversight of pipelines after Colonial attack

“My administration is committed to safeguarding our critical infrastructure, much of which is privately owned and managed like Colonial,” Biden said at the White House. “Private entities are making their own determinations on cybersecurity.”
The Colonial Pipeline hack has shined a light on long standing concerns around private industry owning and operating the vast majority of the nation’s critical infrastructure, often leading to less transparency for the federal government into security operations.
It has also raised concerns that the oil and gas sector has less oversight than other utilities.
In the wake of the ransomware attack on the pipeline carried out by a criminal organization known as DarkSide, according to the FBI officials are taking a closer look at the sector. ....

Press: Let us now praise Liz Cheney

Which is fair, but which also makes things more complicated than they have to be. Let’s all agree: Liz Cheney has no perfect record (name me one politician who does). And her’s is particularly troubling. As a candidate for Senate in 2013, she threw her own sister under the bus by campaigning against same-sex marriage. She tacitly endorsed the birther conspiracy against Barack Obama
But, in a very real sense, that’s beside the point. Cheney’s sins of yesterday don’t cancel out the reality of today. Which is this: Among leaders of a Republican Party that has completely lost its way, only Liz Cheney is making any sense. Among Republicans who have swallowed Trump’s “Big Lie,” only Liz Cheney is telling the truth. And, for telling the truth, Cheney will be booted this week from her perch as No. 3 House Republican in a coup led by No. 1 Trump Sycophant, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy ....

Wyden: Funding infrastructure with gas tax hike a 'big mistake'

“It just seems to be a big mistake to go there when corporate [tax] revenue is down something like 40 percent in the last few years,” Wyden said.
Wyden’s comments come as Congress and the White House are debating the size and scope of infrastructure legislation, as well as how to pay for such a measure. As chairman of the committee with jurisdiction over taxes, Wyden will play a key role in crafting the financing portion of an infrastructure package.

Trump knocks Biden for 'weakness and lack of support for Israel' as violence intensifies

When I was in office we were known as the Peace Presidency, because Israel’s adversaries knew that the United States stood strongly with Israel and there would be swift retribution if Israel was attacked, Trump said in a statement issued through his political action committee.
His comments came as a barrage of rockets were seen over Israel, including near Tel Aviv, following reports that Israeli missile fire caused the collapse of a 12-story building in the Gaza Strip.

Under Biden, the world is getting more violent and more unstable because Biden’s weakness and lack of support for Israel is leading to new attacks on our allies, Trump said. America must always stand with Israel and make clear that the Palestinians must end the violence, terror, and rocket attacks, and make clear that the U.S. will always strongly support Israel’s right to defend itself. ....
