Relief for Indian IT sector as Biden administration removes H-1B visa curbs


The US Government has taken back a regulation proposed by former President Donald Trump s administration that sought to narrow the definition of specialty occupation under the H-1B visa regime. The change will be a relief for Indian information technology firms, the largest users of H-1B visas.
The Department of Homeland Security has formally vacated a regulation that would have redefined the H-1B specialty occupation, restricted off site placement of H-1B employees, and otherwise increased employer compliance obligations. The vacatur follows a federal court ruling that set aside the regulation because the agency did not have good cause to bypass notice and comment rulemaking, in violation of the Administrative Procedures Act, explained immigration law firm Fragomen. ....

Biden, Suga discuss China's aggression; repeat calls for free Indo-Pacific


US President Joe Biden and Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Friday (local time) reiterated their calls for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The meeting between Biden and Suga is their first face-to-face meeting since the US President took office in January.
According to a joint leaders statement posted on the White House website, the two leaders exchanged views on the impact of China s actions on peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and the world, and shared their concerns over Chinese activities that are inconsistent with the international rules-based order, including the use of economic and other forms of coercion. ....

After outcry, White House says President Biden will lift refugee cap in May


Facing swift blowback from allies and aid groups, the White House said President Joe Biden plans to lift his predecessor s historically low cap on refugees by next month, after initially moving only to expand the eligibility criteria for resettlements.
In an emergency determination signed by Biden earlier Friday, he stated the admission of up to 15,000 refugees set by former President Donald Trump this year remains justified by humanitarian concerns and is otherwise in the national interest. But if the cap is reached before the end of the current budget year and the emergency refugee situation persists, then a presidential determination may be issued to raise the ceiling. ....
