SGA talks petitions, vaccine rollout at general body meeting

The DePaulia Theodora Koulouvaris, Staff Writer|February 21, 2021 Petitions During her president’s report at Thursday’s meeting, Alyssa Isberto discussed three petitions currently circulating around campus: one calling on the university to reinstate the Pass/D/Fail option, another requesting that the university make graduation regalia free for the class of 2021 and the third calling on the Biden administration to cancel $50,000 of student loan debt for all students.  After presenting the petitions, SGA took a vote on each one, deciding to sign all three. Vaccine Campaign Rollout Robbie Merkel, SGA’s executive vice president of diversity and equity, recently attended a meeting with Health Promotion and Wellness (HPW) and DePaul’s communications team. They informed him that they sent out a survey to faculty, staff and student workers to “gauge interest in getting the [Covid-19] vaccine.”

DePaul to launch chapter of National Association for Black Journalists

The DePaulia Cailey Gleeson, News Editor|February 15, 2021 NABJ is a nonprofit organization advocating for Black journalists and media professionals nationally and worldwide.  The chapter tentatively titled the DePaul University Association of Black Journalists will be led by adjunct faculty member Judith McCray. “NABJ is open to not just African American students, but Latinx students and biracial students,” McCray said. “It is not limited to students in journalism or communications. People who are in history or any other major can also become members, it’s just two-thirds of the membership has to be students with majors in journalism or communications.” An NABJ chapter at DePaul offers students unique networking opportunities they likely wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere.

SGA talks health services, privacy concerns

The DePaulia Theodora Koulouvaris, Staff Writer|February 14, 2021 Suffoletto discussed services offered through University Counseling Services (UCS).  Consisting of a team of psychologists, a psychiatrist and other staff, UCS provides counseling to students in different areas such as depression and test anxiety, according to the office’s website.  Suffoletto explained the steps that students take when seeking counseling services. “When a student enters, they’re going to do a 15-minute initial consultation,” Suffoletto said.  Students go through an assessment process first so that the office can figure out why a student wants to enter counseling services according to Suffoletto. Then, a student is matched with a counselor and enters counseling.
