This bear named Bablu was the oldest one in captivity in the country at present, an office-bearer of a non-government organisation that runs a bear rescue centre at the zoo said.
Bablu had been rescued from a madaari (street performer) in Rajasthan and brought to Van Vihar on May 6, 2006, at the age of 19. The average lifespan of a bear in the wild is 25 to 30 years. After the death of another bear named Gulabo in January 2022, Bablu became the oldest bear in captivity in India.
Van Vihar National Park administration has attributed it to highly porous boundary wall built along Upper Lake side. The damaged boundary wall provides scope to animals to reach up to Upper Lake side.

After rescuing the turtles from the smugglers, all six turtles were handed over to Bhopal’s Van Vihar.
After the order from a court in Madhya Pradesh, visitors to Bhopal zoo will now be able to see the five rescued African spurred turtles as they will be put on display in Bhopal’s Van Vihar.
