In the wake of the recent flash floods that ravaged Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, questions are once again being raised on the suitability of hydropower or hydroelectricity projects (HEPs) in the Himalayan region. The farmers are agitating for ensuring the continuation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) by legislation. One aspect of this demand is that they be assured of minimum remunerative prices for their produce. Another aspect is that MSP can become the instrument for saving our rivers.
According to the Consortium of the Indian Institutes of Technologies that made the Ganga River Basin Management Plan, the rivers are the best measure of the overall health of our environment.
