Murder convict to farmer protests leader: How people power propels Manjit Singh Dhaner

Not long ago, farmer-activist Manjit Singh Dhaner, 64, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case. Today, he is a free man, leading the farmer protests from pillar 805 at Tikri on Delhiâs border.
Dhaner, senior vice president of the farmer association Bharti Kisan Union Ekta Dakaunda, was twice pardoned in spite of the Supreme Court upholding his sentence.
For 47 days starting in September 2019, over 3,000 people sat outside the Barnala jail, where Dhaner was lodged, during the day, and about 500 of them slept in tents at night. They were served langar, rain or shine. The protest, mobilised by 42 farmer unions under the umbrella of Sangharsh Committee for Manjit Dhaner, forced Punjabâs government to accede to their demand to pardon the leader, not once but twice. ....

Farm unions to meet on invite for talks, say govt's letter 'time-pass' | India News,The Indian Express

“The letter indicates that the government does not want to call a meeting. It is just going through a formality. The government is not serious about holding the next round of talks, otherwise it could have specified the time and venue as it had done on earlier occasions,” said Shiv Kumar Kakka, national president, Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh.
Kakka said the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of 40 protesting unions, will decide on a response.
Jagmohan Singh Patiala, general secretary, Bharti Kisan Union Ekta (Dakaunda), said there was “no need for such a long letter”. “We had already clarified that we will only settle for a repeal of the three laws and the legalisation of MSP for all crops. The Government should focus on these demands instead of beating around the bush. We will decide on the Government’s proposal in tomorrow’s meeting,” he said. ....

Ultra-Left leaders and pro-Left wing extremist elements have hijacked the ongoing farmers agitation, according to intelligence sources.
There are credible intelligence inputs to indicate that these elements are planning to instigate the farmers to indulge in violence, arson and damage public property in the coming days.
As per intel inputs, the farmer leaders are having affiliation with Left wing groups. The farmer leaders actively involved in the current agitation are listed as under:
Satnam Singh Pannu (65), President, Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC). Pannu does not share good relations with the leaders of other farmers organisations.
