Young people are more engaged with politics. That's bad news for Republicans

Political engagement by young Americans has surged to a historically high level, and that’s not good news for the Republican Party, according to the findings of the annual Harvard Youth Poll.
A dozen years ago, after
President Obama’s election, 24% of Americans younger than 30 reported themselves to be politically active, according to the poll, conducted by the Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics. At the time, the Obama campaign was widely credited with having energized young Americans. ....

“Lake Mendocino is the canary in the coal mine when it comes to California’s drought,” State Sen. Mike McGuire (D-Healdsburg) said Wednesday, standing on a dry lakebed with the brown shores of the more-than-half-empty reservoir in the background. “The alarm is sounding and it couldn’t be louder.”
Under normal conditions for this time of the year, more than 40 feet of water would rise over the lunar-looking section of lakebed where McGuire stood with Gov. Gavin Newsom.

With drought conditions affecting much of the West, California is far from unique in respect to current water issues. But on the heels of a second dry winter, the drought situation is particularly acute in Mendocino and Sonoma counties, because the local water supply is dependent on rainfall in the Russian River watershed. ....

Another drought is on the horizon for California. But after years of conversation efforts, Southern California might be able to avoid water restrictions.

After another dry year, drought is coming back to California. The state’s largest reservoirs are half full and the wet season ended last week. But California officials say the state’s in better shape than in 2012: when the last drought hit the golden state. Southern California might be well positioned to handle the dry year due to major conservation efforts taken over the last decade. LA’s water use has declined to 1970’s levels. ....
