Coaldale mayor Kim Craig not running again this fall Poll Yes Mayor Kim Craig says the cloud of negativity hanging over Coaldale for much of the past year has not diminished his high hopes for the community as he gets set to retire from municipal politics. Craig confirmed to The Herald earlier this week he would not be running as mayor again this fall. “I served five terms on council and four consecutive terms as mayor,” he stated. “I have worked diligently and hard for the citizens of Coaldale, and served with the blessing of having many good members of council and a top-notch management team. We have been able to achieve many things this term. I feel I am able to end my career in Coaldale politics on a high note.”

No municipal inspection for Town of Coaldale Poll Yes Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver says he finds no reason to launch a full municipal inspection of the Town of Coaldale at this time. “Municipal inspections are extraordinary measures and are not undertaken lightly,” said McIver in a letter to Coaldale residents earlier this week. “While the (preliminary) review noted there were some issues with respect to the governance and operation of the town, the concerns identified were not of sufficient severity to warrant an inspection of the town.” In terms of those “issues with respect to the governance and operation of the town,” McIver stated he felt they could be addressed in the context of the province’s Municipal Accountability Program (MAP) which he will require the government and administration of the Town of Coaldale to take part in this summer.

Community group Citizens For A Better Coaldale were successful in collecting the necessary number of signatures needed to force a Municipal Inspection of the Town of Coaldale. The petition has now been sent to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs for final certification. Citizens For A Better Coaldale spokesperson Jack Van Rijn said his group needed 1,738 signatures representing 20 per cent of electors in the Town to force the Municipal Inspection.
