Sheffield's Historical Society will host a series of events August 19 through 20 prior to the unveiling of a statue that will pay homage to Elizabeth "Mum Bett" Freeman, a slave who successfully sued for her freedom in 1781.
On Aug 22, 1781, the court ordered that Mum Bett, later known as Elizabeth Freeman, should be emancipated from slavery. She was the first enslaved black woman to sue for her freedom and win.
