No-knock warrant debate returns to Cincinnati City Hall

No-knock warrant debate returns to Cincinnati City Hall
Cincinnati City Council delays restricting no-knock warrants so police, city manager can weigh in
By Jennifer Edwards Baker | February 2, 2021 at 5:31 AM EST - Updated February 2 at 8:16 AM
CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The debate over no-knock warrants returns to Cincinnati City Hall Tuesday.
Last month, Council’s Law & Public Safety Committee delayed proceeding with a motion that, if passed, would severely limit police use of no-knock warrants so they could give the police department and city manager time to weigh in.
Their remarks will be held in two weeks now, not Tuesday, Vice Mayor Christopher Smitherman says. ....

Analysis: Cincinnati's 2021 Council Race Has The Potential To Reshape City Hall

Seventy-five people with petitions to run for one of only nine seats on City Council. Incredible.
Far more than I have ever seen, and I have been covering Cincinnati politics since 1983.
That doesn t mean you are going to see 75 names on the ballot in the November election. Many of those people – mostly people you have likely never heard of, unless they are kin to you or live on your street – will never file those petitions. Many will struggle to get the signatures of 500 Cincinnati registered voters that they would need to qualify for the ballot.
But you may see 35, or some number a little north of that – which would still be a massive field trying to finish the election in the top nine. ....

Controversial Over-the-Rhine project hits snag in Cincinnati City Council

Controversial Over-the-Rhine project hits snag, debate in Cincinnati City Council
Sharon Coolidge and Randy Tucker, Cincinnati Enquirer
Development of a controversial project at the corner of Liberty and Elm streets in Over-the-Rhine is on hold.
The vote was 7-2 with Republican Councilmembers Steve Goodin and Betsy Sundermann voting no.
Mayor John Cranley, who does not vote, but presides over Council, weighed in for the first time and gave council a tongue-lashing for being anti-development.
His points: Elm and Liberty is a vacant lot and nobody is being displaced; the streetcar is hailed for bringing economic development, and that s exactly what this development is; and the incentives being offered on the project are the same as for other projects. ....

GOP including Gov. DeWine's son hold maskless party in Cincinnati

COLUMBUS – Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has asked Ohioans to avoid large gatherings, wear masks and avoid eating with people outside their households to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Instead, a group of fellow Republicans, including the governor s son Ohio Supreme Court Justice Pat DeWine, were pictured at a holiday party Tuesday at Price Hill Chili on Cincinnati s West Side without masks. Several dozen people were visible in photos of the Cincinnati West Republican Club event.
Photos that Hamilton County Chairman Alex Triantafilou shared in the now-deleted tweet showed Pat DeWine posing and smiling with another attendee; neither were wearing masks. Other pictures show the crowd standing for the Pledge of Allegiance in close quarters and without facial coverings.   ....

Cincinnati Council Member Betsy Sundermann s social media activity is causing a stir after an old tweet resurfaced on Twitter this week.
The tweet was made by a profile called Joe America and asks, Who wants a MAGA Army? Sundermann appears to have liked the tweet from her personal account. The Joe America Twitter account no longer exists, but screenshots of the incident are making the rounds online.
In light of the violent insurrection in Washington, D.C., earlier this month that left five people dead, people online demanded answers.
Sundermann said in a brief statement to WVXU the tweet is from last summer and has no relevancy to anything going on right now. ....
