How to top off nitrogen tank is anybody's guess

We applied 175 pounds of total nitrogen per acre. We can come back with more later if we think it will pay. How much should we apply? Should we apply it on whole fields or parts of fields? If just parts, where should we apply more nitrogen?

Bower: Who knows? Do some tissue and soil N testing to see if you actually need more nitrogen. If you do, compare two different field environments. Every year our growing environment is different. In 2019, it was very wet from planting through harvest. Tissue and soil N tests at V5, V10 and R1 revealed we had moved a lot of nitrogen from the upper foot of soil especially from fall and preplant applications. Our soybean yields are stuck in the 50s and low 60s. We haven’t tried fungicides. Could that be the answer? How do we know which one to try? When do we spray?

Bower: Fungicide is not the only thing you may want to try. When is your typical planting date? What are your soil test phosphorus, potassium and soil pH levels? Are you controlling weeds timely? Zero in on right time to apply corn fungicides

There are mixed signals on when to apply fungicides. We normally target brown silk. Now some say spray earlier, especially for tar spot. We saw some tar spot late last year. We always sprayed later because we didn’t want to risk damaging kernel set. What do you recommend?

Bower: It depends on how the year develops. If we see good rainfall and an environment that supports disease infection and development, scout early and often. We certainly need to protect corn from gray leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight if we start to see them in the canopy. If it’s wet like 2019, strongly consider protecting corn from physoderma if a hybrid you’re growing is susceptible. Will foliar fertilizer help soybean yields?

Our neighbor had several soybean fields over 70 bushels per acre. He applied foliar fertilizer. Should we consider foliar fertilizer? If so, which products? When should we apply?

Bower: No matter what extra we applied in 2020, a foliar fertilizer, fungicide or both, soybeans rewarded us with more yield.
There are several foliar fertilizer products available. I would recommend a tissue test at early R3 to see what nutrients are low. Find a combination of a couple foliar fertilizers that will provide what you need. ....
