Credit Christine Trudeau / KYUK Bethel City Council’s vote on a tax on sugary beverages has been indefinitely postponed. The decision was made after extensive public comment at the April 27 city council meeting. The move effectively kills the proposed ordinance unless a council member chooses to resurrect it for a future meeting.
There were nearly four hours of public testimony, both for and against the proposed tax, which would have added a 1-cent-per-ounce tax to sugar-sweetened beverages. As an excise tax, it would have been applied directly to the distributor, but many argued that the cost would have been passed onto the consumer. ....
Credit Elyssa Loughlin / KYUK The Bethel Elder’s Home is reopening to in-person visitors after nearly an entire year of limiting visits to video and phone calls. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation operates the facility and has put a list of restrictions into effect. Visitors to the Elder’s Home must schedule their appointments at least 24 hours in advance, and residents can have only two guests at a time. Also, visitors must undergo a COVID-19 screening upon arrival, wear a mask inside the facility, and keep 6 feet from others. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms will not be allowed inside the Elder’s Home, nor will anyone who has been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the past two weeks, regardless of the visitor’s vaccination status. Outdoor visits will be allowed when practical. ....
Credit Katie Basile / KYUK The region’s first doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine are expected to arrive in Bethel on Dec. 16, according to Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation Vice President of Communications Tiffany Zulkosky. In an interview last week, YKHC Chief of Staff Dr. Ellen Hodges said that the health corporation expects to receive 1,000 doses of the vaccine in its first shipment. Those initial doses will go to residents of the Bethel Elder’s Home, and to the region’s health care workers who could have possible exposure to patients with COVID-19. YKHC expects to receive a second vaccine shipment two weeks later. ....
