All over the country, Italians are celebrating the 700th anniversary of the death of one of their greatest ever writers, a man who left a truly global imprint: Dante Alighieri. Commemorations start with a special online exhibition at the Uffizi Gallery, in Florence. Italians love Dante in the same way we in Britain revere Shakespeare. They are particularly proud of his most famous work, The Divine Comedy, which is the subject of my new Radio 4 series starting next week. When you visit Tuscany, as I have done many times since I was a child (my good fortune is that my mum’s best friend is Tuscan), it feels like Dante, a son of Florence, is still very much alive there.
