Drama for smallest yacht in Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race
Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race day 5 © Bernie Kaaks The Edge fights adverse tides and wind. Race Officials from Fremantle Sailing Club anxiously watched satellite trackers this afternoon when the smallest yacht in the fleet, Dave Kenny s The Edge, was caught in a southerly current and windless conditions near reefs off North West Cape. The use of the boat s engine would have meant instant disqualification so the wily Kenny used all his skills to pilot the boat out of the danger zone to safety around two virtual marks farther north. Indian, the Carkeek 47 skippered by Craig Carter smashed Syrenka s 30-year-old race in a very good time of just under three days, taking one and a half days off the old record.

Indian claims Line Honours in tough Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race
Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race - Indian crosses the finishing line at Exmouth © Bernie Kaaks Indian crossed the Exmouth finishing line at about 10:15 this morning, so her elapsed time of under three days shatters the record set by Ross Swanson s Syrenka 30 years ago by more than one and a half days. It was a difficult race, owner/skipper reported after the race, but we had a team of four talented young helmsmen on board so we rotated the helm regularly. At times we had more than 30 knots of wind and we were travelling at well over 20 knots, which made it a bit wet on board. We also had to battle our way passed Coral Bay, where the wind died out completely for a while, so we had a bit of everything.

Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race - Exmouth leaders becalmed
Craig Carter s Indian - Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race © Mark Loader Indian and Enterprise NG, the two leaders in Fremantle Sailing Club s Fremantle to Exmouth Race and Rally, lay becalmed off Coral Bay this evening, having covered 600 nautical miles of the 700 mile course. Indian s performance last night and this morning was exceptional, converting a 6 mile lead yesterday into a 30 mile lead today, but even Indian could not maintain her speed as the breeze slowly died this afternoon. Mark Nagle s team on Weapon of Choice, some 90 miles back from the leader, may have been smiling as they started to close the massive gap in steady breeze.

Fremantle to Exmouth Race & Rally: Start line defined
Kondili - Fremantle to Exmouth Race & Rally © Bernie Kaaks Start for Race and Rally fleets off North Mole Thirty-seven yachts milling around in the entrance to the harbour was probably not a great idea, but the principle of keeping the start close to North Mole to allow spectators a good view was sound and that remains intact. The line will be north west of the end of North Mole, but close enough for spectators to get a good view. Race yachts will start between the start boat and a buoy on the shore side while rally boats will pass to the west of the start boat.

Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race and Rally less than a week away
Kondili - Fremantle to Exmouth Race & Rally © Bernie Kaaks With Fremantle Sailing Club s Fremantle to Exmouth Ocean Race and Rally less than a week away, thirty seven crews are eagerly looking at advance weather models, all indicating that the race record is set to be smashed. Early indications suggest soft conditions between Fremantle and Geraldton, which should then freshen from the south east as the fleet moves up the coast -almost a perfect scenario for the line honours contenders, Craig Carter s Carkeek 47, Indian and Anthony Kirke and Andrew Nuttman s GP42/Carkeek, Enterprise NG. Both are proven flyers in such conditions and Kirke has already shown in their few encounters that his yacht can match it with her larger rival in the right conditions.
