The German invasion of Crete in May 1941 was the first major invasion led by paratroopers.
It was a costly victory for the Germans, which led Hitler to dismiss such operations in the future.
But the Allies saw the importance of paratroopers and invested heavily in their use during the war.
Early on May 20, 1941, thousands of German paratroopers, known as Fallschirmjägers, in hundreds of transport planes and gliders were preparing to assault the Greek island of Crete.
It was the first time a large-scale invasion was spearheaded almost entirely by paratroopers. The battle was the final part of the Axis invasion of Greece, and on paper, the numbers favored the Allies. ....

It hasn t always been this way. In the days of Empire, Britain appointed New Zealand s Governor-General, or the Governor , as it was called before 1917. In the early days of British settlement when there was no New Zealand Government, we had no say in the matter. 
Even after New Zealand politicians got the right to govern themselves, in 1856, they still had no say - not until the early 1900s when Britain started preparing a short list of Crown-approved candidates, which the New Zealand Prime Minister could choose from. 
It wasn t until 1945, under the leadership of Labour Prime Minister Peter Fraser, that New Zealand put forward the name of wartime leader Sir Bernard Freyberg to be Governor-General. Since 1972, all have been New Zealand residents.  ....

After two years of cancellations and disruptions, Anzac Day 2021 dawned bright, warm and clear across the Mahurangi region, prompting an impressive turnout at local parades and services. Speakers at Puhoi – historian Richard Hern – and Leigh – JP Vince Anaki – reminded the crowds that New Zealand had, in both world wars, sent a disproportionately high percentage of its population to fight – and it had suffered correspondingly huge losses.
