Each year on May 1, the United States celebrates Law Day, established by President Dwight Eisenhower as “a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law.” This year’s Law Day theme, Advancing the Rule of Law Now, focuses on this fundamental principle of our government.
But what exactly is meant by the rule of law, and why is it so important?
At its core, the rule of law reflects the democratic ideal of an independent and impartial judicial branch. Under the rule of law, the outcome of a case is not dependent on the person who filed the case, or the judge who presided over the case, or the courthouse where the case was filed. ....
