N.J. nursing home deaths drop 64% as vaccinations put major dent in COVID-19 cases

COVID-19 deaths fell sharply in New Jersey’s nursing homes in February as the coronavirus’ second wave ebbed and vaccinations became more widespread.
Long-term care facilities recorded at least 147 deaths last month, a 64% drop from January and the first time they declined month-to-month since the summer, according to an NJ Advance Media analysis of state data.
That comes as nursing homes, assisted living centers and other senior facilities were given priority when vaccinations launched in late December, with the state’s most vulnerable seniors and the workers who care for them among the first given shots. With those clinics nearly completed, about 80% of long-term care residents and nearly 50% of staff have now been inoculated, the Health Care Association of New Jersey estimates. ....

A 103-year-old woman on Monday became the first resident of a New Jersey nursing home to be given a vaccine for the coronavirus.
Mildred Clements received the shot shortly after 9 a.m. as Gov. Phil Murphy and the state’s top health official were there to witness the event at Roosevelt Care Center in Old Bridge. ....

NJ long-term care facilities begin to receive COVID vaccines

OLD BRIDGE New Jersey began vaccinating long-term care residents and staff on Monday in a bid to build a firewall against the coronavirus and protect a group that has been devastated by the disease.
With Gov. Phil Murphy looking on at the Roosevelt Care Center in Old Bridge, 103-year-old Mildred Clements, now in her second pandemic, and nurse Esther Moodey were among the first to get vaccinated.
The vaccine brings hope and optimism about the future and promise of a new normal, Moodey said.
Moodey spoke at a press conference that kicked off a vaccine program for New Jersey s 655 long-term care facilities. The program was delayed by a week after the state missed a federal deadline when filling out its application. ....
