live from our studio in singapore, this is bbc news. it is news day. hello, and welcome to the programme. the impossible became possible: that s how the head of nasa described an extraordinary mission to retrieve a capsule containing fragments of an asteroid on sunday. the capsule had travelled a billion miles to land on the asteroid, named bennu, before returning safely back to earth earlier after seven years in space. scientists are now examining the sample, which they hope is 250 grams of rock and dust from the surface. they say it could explain how life on earth began. the retrieval of the capsule happened in the us state of utah, from where rebecca morelle reports. it has entered the earth s atmosphere. a first glimpse of the capsule after its epicjourney through space. high up in the atmosphere, a parachute opens, slowing its descent. touchdown! it has touched down. a textbook landing in the middle of the utah desert. for the team who have spent decades working on ....
this is cnn breaking news. we begin with breaking news from hollywood. the writers guild of america says it has reached a tentative agreement with major television and film studios. that means that after nearly five months, the writers strike that brought the television and film industries to a standstill, could be coming to an end. writers could return by thursday, before the terms are trat ratified. the use of artificial intelligence was reportedly one of the final sticking points. this could pave the way for hollywood to restart many productions that have been halted since may 2nd. cnn media critic brian lowery joins me more from passenger. what more do we know about this? did everyone get what they wanted? well, we don t know the details. but they did put out a statement calling the deal exceptional and saying, basically, that there was something for everyone in the guild. that s not a small thing. the guild represents a diverse collection of writers. everythin ....

you re very welcome. we begin with a space mission that could help explain the origins of life on earth. a nasa capsule containing rock and dust from the surface of an asteroid has successfully touched down in the utah desert. it s the largest ever sample from an asteroid that has made it to earth, and it s an achievement nearly 20 years in the making. american scientists first pitched the idea to nasa in 2004. it wasn t until their third attempt in 2011 that the project was finally approved by nasa. 5 years later in 2016, scientists launched 0siris rex into space. on december 3, 2018, the capsule arrived at asteroid bennu. 0siris rex collected a sample from bennu in october of 2020. then on may 10, 2021, 0siris rex began itsjourney back to earth leading us to this weekend s events. on sunday, it successfully landed back here on earth. recovery teams are now assessing the capsule s condition, before transporting it to clean rooms near salt lake city. it will be disassem ....
