welcome to booktv s fiction edition. you ve written 50 fiction books. let s start with devil in a blue dress, the book that launched a series who is easy rawlins? guest: a kind of every man for the black community in the middle of the twentieth century. his whole view of himself has changed. he came back to southern texas and realized he could no longer live there because of what he has learned and he and thousands of others, from texas and louisiana moved to los angeles. what we do is follow him as a kind of unofficial detective. what he does is reveals what life was like in parts of los angeles that haven t been talked about. host: how did you come up with the name? guest: i was writing a story and there was a voice speaking first-person talking about a party he was given and how he was trying to raise money to pay his rent and a woman he was in love with who was in love with another guy and mouse comes in and looks at the person who is talking and says hey, e the
lot of these books have been published about socialism in response to what has changed over the last five years and they all have a little bit of a different take on it and emphasize different points so my obvious question is, why the united states and socialism and why did you write this book? guest: i noticed that there have been a flurry of books on socialism and that is a surprise because socialism has come into the american mainstream for the first time in our country s history and there have been socialist candidates in the past, eugene debs, norman thomas but they were never in the mainstream and but now in fact at a time when many of us thought socialism had collapsed at the end of the 20th century, suddenly in the 21st century it is back and back with a vengeance. i am not surprised that there are books that try to take stock of this. the unifying theme throughout these books and i think by and large it will be history, it s the idea that socialism has never worked
officials here. first of all, it is clear that we did not sustain and suffer the absolute catastrophic damage that we thought was likely based on the forecast we had last night but we have sustained a tremendous amount of damage and we have thousands and thousands of our fellow citizens whose lives are upside down because their businesses and/or their homes have been damaged and we have lots of challenges around the state to say the least with a variety of things whether electrical power, water service or you name it and we have a lot of work to do but we are in better shape today than might have been the case and so we have a lot to be thankful for as well. as you know by now i m sure hurricane laura made landfall as predicted last night or i should say this morning at 1:00 a.m. as a very strong category four hurricane with sustained winds of 150 miles per hour. this was most powerful storm to ever make landfall in louisiana and it is still a powerful storm that is in the st
