Parents of twins born during pandemic celebrate first Mother s Day
First-time parents Gabrielle and Benjamin McCarthy had more than a few curveballs thrown their way on their journey to becoming parents in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic.
After having trouble conceiving, the couple tried In Vitro Fertilization and had success with one embryo. This embryo split into two, making them the proud parents of the rare type of Monoamniotic-Monochrorionic twins. This type of twin only has a 50 percent survival rate and must be monitored closely.
“They shared the same sac and placenta, which usually even identical twins are in different sacs,” Gabrielle said. “So their umbilical cords were intertwined and tangled up with one another.”
