Sharad Pawar to work for opposition unity: NCP | India News


MUMBAI: Against the backdrop of the results of the West Bengal assembly polls wherein the local TMC romped home by defeating its close challenger BJP, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday said its chief Sharad Pawar will try to form a united front of opposition parties, especially of regional outfits.
Speaking to reporters here, NCP national spokesman and Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik referred to the statement of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee who reportedly said that the unity of the opposition is necessary.
Sharad Pawar was also trying to unite all opposition parties before the Bengal elections. In the next few days, Pawar will work for the unity of opposition parties, especially of regional parties, Malik said. ....

Mamata Banerjee is trailing in early trends in a prestige fight in Bengal s Nandigram where her BJP rival is her former trusted lieutenant Suvendu Adhikari.

Nandigram is the town that catapulted Mamata Banerjee to power in 2011.
In 2011, Suvendu Adhikari was Ms Banerjee s right hand man as she campaigned for farmers land rights and rallied people around the Trinamool. He later won from the constituency and for years, the Adhikari family had a firm grip over Nandigram.

The counting of votes for 822 assembly seats across four states and union territory is underway. While Assam and West Bengal saw multiple phases of polling, electors in Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu cast their votes in a single phase on April 6.
