Laramie Company Helps Develop New COVID-19 Rapid Test

7:50
Quick and accurate COVID-19 testing is a key part of getting the pandemic under control. And a Laramie company is part of the effort to make that a reality. Wyoming Public Radio s Ivy Engel talked to CellDrop Biosciences founder, Ben Noren, about the type of testing they are developing.
Ben Noren: We use materials called hydrogels. So if you think of jello, it s probably the most ubiquitous example of a hydrogel. Hydrogels make up a lot of what s in your body and so using synthetic hydrogels, we re able to recreate things like the spaces that cells live inside of you. This particular project was based out of using hydrogel like a sponge and taking these, what s called lateral flow amino assay tests, which basically detect various biological substances in a sample like saliva, but doing it in a way that works better than what existed. Because unlike existing tests, we could build these hydrogel structures at very, very small length scales, dehydrate them, and when w ....

UW announces spinout company receives funding to develop rapid COVID-19 antigen test – Sheridan Media

In a press release, the University of Wyoming has announced that their spinout company, CellDrop Biosciences Inc., is part of a $354,000 grant to develop sensitive and extremely fast antigen tests for COVID-19 that will produce results in under three minutes.
The collaborative effort is spearheaded by the Oakey biomedical engineering laboratory at UW and involves CellDrop Biosciences; Metrohm Raman, a Laramie-based manufacturer of analytical systems; and the lab of Hadley Sikes, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology associate professor of chemical engineering.
The competitive grant comes from the COVID Innovations Fund of UW’s Wyoming Health and Bioscience Innovation Hub, which is administering federal CARES Act funding from the state to support entrepreneurs, researchers, faculty members and business owners who propose innovative solutions addressing unsolved problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
