Since 2018, websites that use third-party cookies to track people s browsing activity have been required by European law to disclose that fact to their sites visitors.
As a result, cookie banners are now ubiquitous across the web, often irritating users with popups that ask them to agree to the third-party tracking.
GitHub realized its users found the banners annoying, so it decided on a solution to get rid of the banners: eliminating third-party cookies entirely. 
However, doing so came with a trade-off: Turning off those cookies also limits GitHub s own ability to track which of its pages and products are popular with users. ....
