Marion Jones – It’s More Than Meets the Eye
Earlier this week, we reported on the pending handing over of the Belize City Center to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The building is the last structure to be surrendered from the control of Belize Infrastructure Limited to the respective ministries under the Government of Belize. Today, we visited another facility, the Marion Jones Sporting Complex, which we found to be in a state of disrepair. As it turns out, what you see on the outside is a lot different from the empty spaces and decrepit sections of the building. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The White Elephant that is the Belize City Center
The Belize City Center was inaugurated with much fanfare when it opened its doors on April thirtieth, 2018. That was at least two years before COVID-19 became a reality. In the time before the pandemic made its way to Belize, the building was hardly in use, despite the number of scheduled events necessary for its stakeholders to turn a profit. Since March of last year, the giant sliding doors that protect the structure have remained shut and the future of the facility built from PetroCaribe largess was up in the air. In the coming months the Civic will be turned over to the Ministry of Sports, Youth and e-Governance and plans are to join forces with the Belize City Council to operate and maintain the sporting complex.
