Pat Murphy: 'It was so volatile. I was in fear all the time'


“I was half-dreading the 100th anniversary, but in fact, the research and the events that happened were very, very considered,” says Murphy.
“In 1966, it was just an utterly unquestioning, nationalist commemoration. I remember as a schoolgirl buying into that, like a lot of us did, in those days. There was a TV series that went on all week, called Insurrection, a mockumentary of each day of the Rising. I’ve seen it since; it’s kind of fascinating. We were kind of thrilled by that. We felt it was like a totally accurate representation of the way things were, had television cameras been there. So to move from that, directly after that, to Belfast, was quite a shock. We had moved – inadvertently – into a fairly loyalist neighbourhood. And then when the trouble started, we moved into a nationalist neighbourhood. I can remember hearing gunfire and thinking: the Rising must have been like this. That it wasn’t this kind of great, glorious flag- ....

Charlie Whisker: 'The coolest dad, a rockstar, with a different way of looking at the world'


 
Charlie Whisker, who has died at the age of 71 in the Fern Dean nursing home in Blackrock, was one of Ireland’s most highly regarded painters whose work is in the collections of the Arts Council, AIB and the Ulster Museum and in the private collections of U2 members, Steven Soderberg, John Boorman, Paul McGuinness and Henry Mountcharles.
He had solo exhibitions in the Kerlin, Solomon and the Hendricks galleries in Dublin and the On the Wall Gallery in Belfast. His work, known for its dreamlike, often nightmarish, enigmatic quality and occasionally stark graphic effects, was deeply personal and drew from his northern background, extensive reading and love of poetry, literature and music. ....

Blackshaw at centre of row over artwork authenticity


A row has begun in the art world over the authenticity of works which their seller says are by Co Antrim-born man Basil Blackshaw - described as one of Ireland s finest artists.
Viewers of the BBC art programme Fake or Fortune? are often on the edge of their seat as host Fiona Bruce and her team try to establish the authenticity of paintings.
Now art lovers in Northern Ireland have their own Fake or Fortune? mystery after the late artist s estate issued an alert over some of the Blackshaws on sale.
The estate of Blackshaw, who died in 2016, warned that there were a huge amount of paintings purporting to be painted by Basil Blackshaw . ....
