At the regular TNRD Board of Directors meeting on Dec. 17, 2020, former RadioNL host Bob Price made a presentation on behalf of Stump Lake Ranch and residents along Hwy 5A, requesting that a ban on non-local commercial truck traffic along that route be supported by the TNRD.
At the time, the board believed that not enough information had been provided, and were hesitant to commit to a letter of support.
Following a presentation by Ministry of Transportation Regional Operations Manager Graeme Schimpf and Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement District Manager Glenn Taylor in March, the board once again deferred their decision, although both Schimpf and Taylor indicated that 5A was safe for commercial vehicle traffic.
Addresses impacted in Canford are 2757, 2797, 2815, 2861 and 2901 Merritt Spences Bridge Hwy 8. In addition to the wildfire in the Lower Nicola, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District is also seeing fire activity in the western part of the region, near 16 Mile, north of Cache Creek. The regional district notes the early wildfires and the current dry conditions are a reminder to remain prepared to respond in the event of an emergency. At this time, the situation in Lower Nicola is not an evacuation order, but an alert to ensure residents can make preparations in case it becomes necessary to evacuate. Residents on evacuation alert will be given as much advance notice as possible should evacuation be required; however, residents may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.
