Community gardens in Austin: How to start, where to volunteer, tips


One thing I feel the need to put out there: I hated gardening when I was a kid. I dreaded the Sundays when my parents would drag tools out of the shed and announce it was time to pull weeds. So I am sure my family found it hilarious when, in January, three months into living alone during a pandemic, I reached my limit for spending time indoors and announced I would be joining a community garden. Does this make me an adult? The jury is still out on that one. 
Despite my enthusiasm for this idea, I quickly realized I was out of my depth. I have no idea how to make vegetables grow, much less in the backwards weather of Central Texas imagine my surprise when I learned that January is considered halfway through the growing season rather than, you know, the middle of winter. ....

Letters to the Editor, April 1: Hermosa parking, Redondo garden, Manhattan apology, Let 'er RIP Peterson


Dear ER:
Words to express regret about Bruce’s Beach need to be precise because they can be used for political pressure or  legal actions against the city of Manhattan Beach (Racial Reckoning: Manhattan Beach City Council stops short of issuing a Bruce’s Beach apology,” ER Marcy 18, 2021). Acknowledgement and apology have two different legal implications. An apology, would be construed as a public admission of guilt. An apology is a means to an end and that end is money. The City must not issue an apology, but opt instead for a Resolution of Acknowledgement. The acknowledgement should keep historical facts to a minimum and must not reference acts that are still in dispute or are uncorroborated. The resolution must make clear that it is intended as an expression of sympathy and not an admission of guilt. The acknowledgement can be supplemented by noting that we are today a welcoming and tolerant city opposed to any and all acts of racism and bigotry. Please write to the ....
