‘Box set drama’ was the overarching theme for
Crips with Chips, which seemed odd for an online scratch night – five ‘box set dramas’ in about an hour or so. The term ‘crip’ is, or rather was, a derogatory slang term for ‘cripple’, though it appears to be repurposed by the likes of Graeae and others for positive reasons. The word has been used by disability campaigners for decades – there was even a hashtag, #CripTheVote, first used for the 2016 United States elections to highlight disability policy issues in America. Anyway, this event was hosted by Sharon D Clarke and Leanna Benjamin, and like almost everyone seen by the audience, introductions were disabled-friendly, with detailed descriptions of what they were wearing and where they were (as in whether they were in their front room, bedroom or elsewhere at home). ....

The atmosphere in the Royal Shakespeare theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon is a little emotional. The cast are dress rehearsing the final scene of The Winterâs Tale. The wronged heroine, Hermione, has somehow been brought back from the dead, her jealous husband has realised the error of his ways, and the couple have been reunited with their long-lost daughter. Itâs perhaps the most famous â if improbable â fairytale ending in Shakespeare. As the lights come up, I think I spy the eyes of one of the crew looking a little red. Blame the face mask. ....

When the pandemic hit, theatre groups across Scotland were left without live performances, spaces to rehearse and, perhaps most importantly, face-to-face contact with their fellow performers.
With lockdown restrictions and grim news headlines not exactly lightening the mood, it looked like many young talents would have to give up the thing they loved indefinitely, possibly for good.
Fortunately, the appropriately named Positive Stories for Negative Times project was formed to provide a lifeline. ....

Troy Story, the RSC’s adaptation of as many tales from Greek myth, takes about a third as long as it does to recite the whole of the

Gregory Doran’s production is ambitious in its starkness, but never quite manages to break out of the plodding rhythm of its lines – or to bring the stories into the 21st century. (The venture, undertaken without sets or costumes, was livestreamed this past weekend and is available through Saturday to ticket-holders via catch-up.) ....

REVIEW: RSC's Troy Story blends the epic and the intimate in captivating style

It sounds crass to suggest that this year of great heartbreak and loss could turn out to be in any way good for the arts. The past ten months have laid waste to so many lives, livelihoods and dreams; it is doubtful that anyone will look back on 2020 with fondness. And yet the extraordinary nature of these times is leading to works of extraordinary creativity, with artists doing things that are genuinely new.
There is a production of A Christmas Carol which dissolves the boundary between cinema and theatre. There is also an exquisite horror film called Host, which is set in a Zoom call. These things would not have been made in any other year. And nor would Troy Story, in which the RSC has essentially invented a genre. That it exists at all is a miracle; that it is good is a mere bonus. ....
