Chinese citizens evaluate losses in the wake of Typhoon Doksuri

Unprecedented rainfall, attributed to Typhoon Doksuri s remnants, wreaked havoc in northeast China, especially in corn-growing Jilin province s Shulan city, where over 15,000 residents were evacuated due to devastating floods. Continuous rains since August 1, 2023, shattered previous records, with areas receiving up to 489 mm. This deluge caused infrastructural damages, including bridge collapses and damaged roads. Although typhoons typically spare China s northeast, this year was an exception. Over 1.54 million individuals were evacuated from vulnerable zones in Hebei province. Beijing authorities cautioned about potential sinkholes and mudslides in some districts. The Haihe river basin experienced its most severe flooding since 1963, with officials stating the water might take a month to recede in Hebei.
