Baylor NAACP chapter president shares experience being on institution s Commission on Historic Campus Representations

WACO, Texas In the past, Baylor University students have voiced their concerns regarding the statue of founder Judge R.E.B. Baylor on campus. Knowing Baylor owned slaves, the students have called for the statue to be removed.  
In June, the Commission on Historic Campus Representations was established as part of a resolution on racial healing and justice, acknowledging the university’s historical connections to both slavery and the Confederacy. The commission recently released this report.
While there are no plans to remove the Judge R.E.B. Baylor statue, there are changes to come. Baylor NAACP President Lexy Bogney believes the university is taking what seems to be a first step in the right direction. Althoug ....

In this first of three Conversation Series events, Dr. Ronald Johnson, the Ralph and Bessie Mae Lynn Chair of History in Baylor University’s History Department, will be joined by a panel of experts who provide insight into the history of slavery in America. This first step in understanding the historical context of Baylor’s founding and early years will provide a foundation for two additional conversations – one on slavery in Texas and in Baptist life, and another on slavery and the founding of Baylor University. This historical study is similar to one undertaken by members of Baylor’s Commission on Historic Campus Representations as part of a commitment to forthrightly and fully present Baylor’s history and to foster an environment of racial equality in which all students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Baylor know they are valued and loved throughout the reaches of the Baylor Family. ....
