The Spanish government lifted its coronavirus-related state of emergency at midnight on Sunday. The state of emergency
allowed the government to ban non-essential travel between regions, and required citizens to stay at home between 11pm and 6am. Spain was recording around 20,000 daily cases of Covid-19 when the curfew was introduced, and although this number peaked at more than 40,000 in January, it has since receded to just over 8,000 on Saturday. ....

Spaniards Celebrate Curfew End With 'Freedom' Fiestas


After a strict stay-at-home order went into effect at the start of the virus pandemic in early 2020, the country s second state of emergency kicked in last October. It granted people more freedoms but still, late-night curfews restricted social gatherings.
Nationwide, there are 198 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 population. Some regions are experiencing higher rates, like Navarra, which will maintain restrictions until the spread is controlled. 
In Aragon, the cases stand around 297 per 100,000. Authorities are continuing the curfew in that region. In the Balearic Islands, where the infection rate is 59 per 100,000, the government will maintain the curfew.
The highest infection rate is seen in Basque Country, with an infection rate of around 463 per 100,000. However, efforts to maintain the curfew there were scrapped by the Basque High Court on Friday. ....

With the state of alarm in Spain having ended on Sunday, Spain’s regions – which are in charge of controlling the pandemic in their territories – no longer have the sole authority to introduce coronavirus restrictions on fundamental rights, specifically the nighttime curfew, limits on social gatherings and perimetral lockdowns of regions, provinces and municipalities. Now, these measures once again need to be authorized by the courts.
Ahead of the end of the state of alarm on May 9, some regional governments sought support from the courts, while others prepared alternative measures. The Basque government asked for authorization to seal its regional borders, but the request was denied last Friday. This means that there are currently no restrictions on inter-regional travel in Spain. ....
