Once a quiet fishing village, Yokohama became Japan’s primary port after the country opened to foreign trade in the 19th century, acting as a gateway to the Western world and prospering as a result. But World War II brought an end to the city’s ascension and in the years that followed many companies relocated to Tokyo, taking Yokohama’s erstwhile economic stimulus with them.
Recognizing the need to overhaul the city’s image, development plans were drawn up in 1965 to re-establish the capital of Kanagawa prefecture as a major business center.
