there will likely now be multiple investigations. paula newton is joining us live from halifax. and what will investigators focus on now? reporter: they will focus on whether or not this was a catastrophic event that entailed just one thing going wrong or if this was multiple things given the strain on that vehicle. remember, we had heard that there were quite a few successful expeditions to the titanic wreck, was there stress put on the titan which then because it was largely unregulated wasn t tested going through the motions. you ve had so many people weigh in on this and one is james cameron who he himself has been to the wreck of the titanic and other deep sea explorations. listen to him now. i think there is almost a surreal irony. the titanic sank because the captain took it into an ice field on a moonless night with poor visibility after he had been repeatedly warned by telegram, by are a during t b are a during the day that that is what was ahead. and so a p
in consultation with experts from within the unified command, the take pleb debris is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber. let s bring in barry lipsky, a public diving expert from the drivers association. so nice to see you. from what you heard in that press conference, what do you think went wrong with the titan ? xwomgood morning from long island, new york. the coast guard says we had a catastrophic implosion. which basically means that the submarine itself folded in, collapsed in, and that is due to the tremendous pressure that the submarine was reacting to very low depths like that. and the air that we re in right now as pressure and the water has pressure, but down at that depth, the pressure on the outside of the submarine was
yes, that is how we succeed and go forward. that is how the human life goes on and becomes more and more successful. all right. barry lipsky, nice to see i. thank you for all the work you do and your time. you re very welcome. there is clean upafter storms that had hail so large that it injured people. allison chinchar is in the weather center. not over yet. tell us where the next storm system is expected. and in a lot of the same areas that we saw in the last few days. the central u.s. is still really going to be the focal point for today in terms of severe weather. you still have rain across areas of the southeast from the stalled front, but it is this center portion of the country is where the activity will be not only today but the last 48
descending or it was on the bottom, so there s the great possibility of entanglement, but then why don t we hear from them? was the antenna knocked off? how come they can t communicate? was the electrical flooded and prevent good kind of signaling to take place again? and then where are all the buoys and so forth that are attached to the sub? they re supposed to come up. they re supposed to come up with the sub, but they haven t come up without the sub either that we know about. so where is the sub? is it there? is it mid-water? is it at the surface? if the currents are running six to eight knots which they do very usually around that area. that s 600 to 800 feet per minute they re traveling which means they re hundreds and hundreds of miles from the titanic as we are here today. look, these are all questions that are being asked after hopefully there is some miracle. barry lipsky, thank you for being here and thank you for answering these questions. kate? coming up next, new
