It’s easy to see why director Ryan Murphy was attracted to this Tony-nominated stage musical; it’s basically a double-length episode of his hit TV series, “Glee.”

“The Prom” a Netflix original boldly blends serious social commentary with frivolous Broadway razzmatazz, and gets away with it because the Bob Martin/Chad Beuelin script cheekily acknowledges as much. ....

Netflix's The Prom – Film Review (starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and James Corden)

This film shouldn’t work. It has James ‘Carpool’ Corden in it, jazz-handing with grim abandon and belting out unmemorable songs in a dodgy American accent. Its lead actress, an unknown called Jo Ellen Pellman, is dementedly smiley throughout. The political message of the film is so obvious it feels screamed into your face: tolerance is good, homophobia and small-town parochialism bad, bad, bad. Then there’s the length issue: nominally two hours 12 minutes, the film feels more like a couple of years.
And yet somehow it works. I watched with my mother who gazed over at me at intervals, her face a rainbowed moon of wonder. ‘This is extraordinary!’ she’d sing. ‘This is the best film I have ever seen! It s just like Abba!’ It wasn’t the best film she d seen, not by some distance, but who can pan a movie that brings an upper-middle aged woman to happy tears (and cathartic tears when injustices set up at the start of the ....
