In 1993, The Mail printed a feature which charted the rise and fall of the works. It stated that during the early part of the 19th century Barrow was a small port involved with the shipment of iron ore. The coming of the railway and the entrepreneurial vision of industrialists such as Schneider, Ramsden and Hannay led to the formation of the Barrow Haematite Iron and Steel Company in 1866. By 1876 the iron and steelworks were the largest in the world. At its peak, more than 5,000 workers were employed at the plant. The Barrow works were the first in the world to mass produce railway lines by rolling. Rails became a company speciality and were exported to the four corners of the globe. ....
