Rick: well, as you shiver outside, oil is hovering above $91 a barrel which means that heating your house has just gotten more expensive. sandra smith from the fox business network is live once again today in chicago with more on that. sandra? reporter: hey, rick. well, yeah, if you heat your home in the northeastern united states, you re likely to be paying more for your heating bill this winter. we re not just looking at oil prices that are now hovering at two-year highs above that $91 a barrel mark, we have a whole other concern for consumers, and that s rising heating bill costs. heating oil is up 26% just over the past year which means that you re paying definitely more this year over last year to heat your home in the northeast. and in the month of december alone, rick, because it s so chilly outside and we re seeing such a big pickup in demand for heating oil, we re seeing prices in the month of december up about 9%. there s a little good news here for heating your home, and t ....
Classified government documents. rick: you might have noticed this. record gas prices bringing pain at the pump just in time for the holidays, and for the first time on record the national aaa average reached over just $3 a gallon christmas day. california has the highest prices at $3.27 a gallon. meantime colorado is the state with the lowest clocking in at $2.75. sbn reporter sandra smith is at the chicago mercantile exchange. why the high gas prices? we know that gas prices follow crude oil prices. crude oil prices are also getting up there. over the the holiday weekend and this morning we are seeing the crude oil topping that $90 a barrel mark. that is a two year high for crude prices, meanwhile we are seeing the gas prices rising in sync with those, gas prices at the pump hitting two years high. what you said is exactly key, and that is the fact that we ....
Well, traveling this christmas eve may cost you more than last year. gas prices have topped $3 a gallon for the first time in two years. it s especially surprising since gas prices usually drop this time of the year. linsey davis reports from new york. reporter: getting to grandma s house for the holidays has never been so expensive. on a national average basis we have never paid $3 a gallon on christmas eve or a christmas. reporter: according to aaa, the national average for a regular gallon of gas crossed the milestone $3 mark for the first time in more than two years. that s up more than 13% from last december, and 76% higher from december 2008. this is the only time we ve really traveled. just can t afford gas and everything else. just makes it ridiculous. we want to travel, we know we ve got to pay for it. reporter: the rising gas prices is most apparent on the west coast and in the northeast. drivers can largely blame the rise in crude oil which passed the $90 a bar ....
And once you establish how much oil, below the five million barrel mark, which we ve publicized, the question is, where s the oil? we know certain things happen. we know a certain amount was produced, that s measurable. we know a certain amount was skimmed, that s measurable. we know a certain amount was burned, that s measurable. we know based on tests and records and data that you have a certain amount of effectiveness with dispersants and we know a certain amount evaporates and a certain amount is biodegraded. to go back to our basic algebra that we all tried to struggle with in school, if you solve for x, that s it. when you have a 10% airor in the flow rate, combined with the 10% flow rate evaporation i would say yes and no. we know to a virtual certainty how much was produced. some of the numbers are absolute, okay and it s a model. models are approximatation of reality and therefore, they re never perfect. but i think it s a point of ....
Jenna, is in this response to this jobs report? jenna: it is a little bit because there s been a mixed response by investors. i ve really been paying close to the price of oil that dropped below the $70 a barrel mark. this job information that we got today is a little bit mixed for investors because while we do see that we have some positive signs, we have the average workweek going up, for example, which means we re working more hours, and that s a positive indication maybe we ll see more hiring, we also see job growth in factory workers, for example, we haven t seen that since the beginning of this recession. we also see negative news as well with more job loss than we expected, and also just this feeling of wondering whether or not there s really a job recovery taking place. investors are feeling a little bit mixed on this news, and we re watching the markets try to hold on to these levels we re at right now. as far as oil and what s going on on the global scale and what investors a ....
