Bari Newport Takes Over as GableStage's New Artistic Director

While mourning one of South Florida theater’s most influential leaders, the GableStage board filled a programming void with Engage@GableStage, featuring fresh and free short, digital content from diverse artists.
But the board’s most significant task carried out with a search committee that included Guthrie Theater artistic director Joseph Haj and actor-writer-director Teo Castellanos was to select Adler’s successor. A national search yielded 85 applicants, with the pool then narrowed to 25, then 10, then five. then one.
The new leader at the helm of GableStage is Bari Newport, who has served for the past nine years as producing artistic director of the Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor, Maine. ....

New Francophone work digs into Maine Roots

Penobscot Theatre Company has commissioned Atlanta-based, French-speaking theatre company Théâtre du Rêve (Theatre of the Dream) to create an original work inspired by Maine poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem “Evangeline, a Tale of Acadie.” The piece, “Je Ne Suis Pas Evangeline (I am not Evangeline),” will be the final offering of the Digitus Theatrum Main Course subscription series available to stream from Thursday, April 22, through Sunday, May 9.
“I fell head over heels in love with Maine more than a decade ago, when I toured with a French-language play to Portland,” says Théâtre du Rêve Producing Artistic Director Caryoln Cook. “I love the place, I love the people, I love the sense of rootedness, and I love the history. I’m thrilled to be working with Penobscot Theatre Company on this dream project.” ....

A one of a kind online curiosity that lets audiences engage in the fun as they watch two detectives question six quirky suspects will be presented by the Penobscot Theatre Company. With 20 live performances via zoom, the mystery of “Who Killed Zolan Mize?” runs online from March 11 through April 3.
“Who Killed Zolan Mize?” is the next installment in Penobscot Theatre Company’s ambitious 47th Season, Digitus Theatrum, which includes 17 unique offerings. The creative genius’ behind the project are no strangers to the Penobscot Theatre Company stage with Florida-based professional actor duo Rachel Burttram Powers (“Ugly Lies the Bone”) and Brendan Powers (“Our Town,” “August Osage County”) as the writers, creators, directors, detectives, and all six suspects. ....

BANGOR “Flyin’ Solo,” an autobiographical theatrical memoir featuring 12 actors and performed live remotely will be available online from Thursday, Jan. 21, through Sunday, Feb. 7, presented by the Penobscot Theatre Company.
In the style defined by the likes of Spalding Gray, Eric Bogosian, Eddie Izzard and Whoopie Goldberg, Flyin Solo brings personal stories to life all written and performed by the actor. “I was involved in quite a bit of solo performance as a young actor,” said producing artistic director Bari Newport. “It is a very specific writing and performing style that is more than just storytelling. It is a powerful performance and creation method that I have wanted to share with our actors and audience since I arrived nine years ago. COVID made it possible!” ....
