Barbados – New president of the Barbados Chapter of the International Women’s Forum (IWF), Donna Every, said that the chapter was pleased to join in celebrating International Women’s Day and that it fully endorses the theme #ChoosetoChallenge.
“IWF Barbados is a chapter of women leaders who choose to challenge the status quo, whether it is women in poverty, gender inequality or the under-representation of women in STEM careers, on boards of directors or in other leadership positions. To this end, we will continue to work on our areas of focus: Women in STEM, women on boards and the financial empowerment of young women,” Every said. ....

Barbadian Rodney Taylor appointed CTU secretary-general

Port of Spain – Barbadian technology expert Rodney Taylor has been appointed Secretary-General of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) after a public, Caribbean-wide recruitment process, the organisation said on Monday.
Taylor, whose appointment took effect on Monday, is the first Barbadian national substantively appointed to head the CTU in its 32-year history.
He was previously seconded to the CTU between June 2010 and August 2014 to work as its business development and operations manager, in a role that saw him working with regional governments in the development of policies to govern information and communications technology (ICT). This involved leading the work to operationalise the CTU’s Caribbean Centre of Excellence, to offer consultancy services to member states, and representing the region in many international ICT conferences. ....

I thought it would be a great opportunity to talk about STEM this week especially as yesterday was proclaimed by the United Nations as International Day for Women and Girls in Science.
STEM is the acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. One might wonder why there is a day set apart to recognize and celebrate women and girls in science.
That is because there is cause for celebration when women and girls choose to study and pursue careers in these fields. An article on the World Economic Forum’s website states: When it comes to the world of science, women are in the minority. ....
