And as hard as country music may try to fit Matt Stell into one of those tried and true boxes, it’s darn near impossible.
Heck, he’s 6’7.
But more so than the massive physique that helped Stell become a collegiate basketball standout, the Platinum certified singer has proven via the songs he sings and the shows he puts on that he is far too powerful of an artist to ever fit into some sort of singular category. Most All-Black towns were created in Oklahoma when former slaves of the five civilized tribes were granted allotments of forty acres. Most chose to live near other African Americans for security and fellowship. They formed communities with churches, schools, businesses, and newspapers. As they grew larger and more established, they advertised in the “states” for other freed slaves to join them. Many of those migrating to the Territory participated in the land run of 1889. From 1865 to 1920 African Americans created at least fifty identifiable towns. Some lasted only a few years, and others couldn’t survive the depression years.

The song was written as a tribute to his stepson. Directed by Peter Zavadil, the video depicts the struggles of being a hard-working American trying to make a living and being something more to someone special. Shane plays a supporting role as a mechanic in his first-ever music video. My position has always been that this song is bigger than just my personal story.
