WHEN we throw away the vegetable and fruit peeling in our kitchen garbage can or the empty shampoo and conditioner sachets, the destination of these solid wastes are usually the least of our concern. We take the trash out when it’s full to the designated collection points in our barangay and forget about them ....

Mayor to certify Single-use Plastic Ban ordinance as urgent

IN RESPONSE to various calls from different environment groups, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio is set to certify the proposed Single-use Plastic (SUP) Ban ordinance in the city as urgent.
We are intent on writing the Sangguniang Panlungsod (City Council) on saying na urgent ang ban of single-use plastic, the mayor said in a radio interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio on Monday, February 1, 2020.
She said that she was requested to submit a letter to the council intending to have the proposed ordinance as one of their priority legislative measures to be passed.
The ordinance is still pending with the committee on environment, led by Councilor Diosdado Mahipus Jr. ....

Environmental group calls for ban of single-use plastics in Davao City

DAVAO CITY – Environmental groups here are calling for the banning of single-use plastics here after almost 2,000 different types of solid wastes were collected in a recent river clean-up.
In a statement Friday, January 28, the Interface Development Interventions (IDIS) and Bantay Bukid volunteers said they were able to collect a total of 1,954 pieces of waste in the river clean-up and brand audit last January 27at the Panigan-Tamugan Watershed in Baguio District here.
“With this alarming result of river clean-up, IDIS and other environmental groups once again call for the ban of single-use plastics in Davao City,” they said. ....

Native PH lizard, which is' vulnerable to extinction', found dead in Davao City watershed – Manila Bulletin

DAVAO CITY – Davao City-based environmental group Interface Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS) found a dead Philippine Sailfin Lizard, considered an endemic species of the Philippines that is already vulnerable to extinction, which was reportedly shot along the riverbanks of Panigan-Tamugan watershed in Baguio District here.

IDIS executive director Mark Peñalver said, in an interview, that the dead creature, known to locals as “ibid”, was found during a routine river clean-up and brand audit conducted by the environmental group with members of Bantay Bukid last Wednesday, January 27, along the riverbanks of the watershed, considered as Davao’s next water source. ....
