5 great walks in the Lune Valley

My walk heads upstream from Cowan Bridge beside Leck Beck into Ease Gill, where disappearing streams, dry ravines and mysterious holes hint of the nether world. Begging indulgence, I’d sneak over the county boundary onto Crag Hill and Great Coum for grand views over Barbondale and Dentdale before an easy lope past the County Stone onto Gragareth.

This ten-mile route is easy to follow and takes in a huge variety of scenery and pathways beneath the eerie but beautiful Menwith Hill Camp.
1. It begins from the Stainburn Forest Car Park (nearest postcode HG3 1TQ, GR SE 236 522) at the corner of Norwood Lane and Broad Dubb Road. The car park does get busy at a weekend, with parking for up to about 30 cars.
2. From the car park, walk a short stretch along the road (north-west) to join a way-marked path that crosses the fields towards Little Alms Cliff, a distinct rock formation. Continue beyond the rocks to pass through a gate that enters the plantation. This initial path is very boggy in places and continues dead straight between the trees.   ....
