OTTAWA - An Ontario city says it has found a way to quickly and effectively get homeless veterans off the streets in a model that could be replicated in other municipalities.
Those involved will note that it may be impossible to eliminate homelessness because inevitably someone may find themselves out of home for unexpected personal or financial reasons.
But it is possible to get to whatâs known as âfunctional zero,â when a city houses more people than the number who become homeless in a month. ....

OTTAWA - One of the unions representing workers at Veterans Affairs Canada is sounding the alarm over what it alleges is widespread harassment and discrimination within the department.
The Union of Veterans Affairs Employees says it surveyed more than 350 of its roughly 2,700 members in the fall, and found more than one in three had experienced some form of harassment in the workplace.
Meanwhile, the union reported that nearly one in five respondents had faced some sort of discrimination based on nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or another factor. ....

OTTAWA - Canadaâs new veterans ombudsman says she has endured the same long and frustrating wait as tens of thousands of other former military members after applying for support and benefits for her service-related injuries.
Retired Canadian Army colonel Nishika Jardine, who took over as ombudsman last month, says she waited more than a year to find out whether her application for disability benefits had been approved by Veterans Affairs Canada. ....
