Riverfront report stresses urgent revival of Ravi - Newspaper


LAHORE: Major remedies have been recommended for revitalisation of the Ravi river under the Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project following various test reports on wastewater quality.
With the launch of civil work on the project after approval and submission of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report, the project team is set to first start work on the renaissance of the river.
“After signing of the Indus Waters Treaty, India constructed additional diversion capacity at Madhopur headworks, diverting the perennial flows. The flows that used to be released downstream to be picked up at Balloki were also diverted from Madhopur. Subsequently, India constructed Thein Dam in 2000 with a live storage capacity of 1.92 million acre feet (MAF). With this India is now capable of storing the flows that used to flow downstream of Madhopur headworks,” reads an internal report of the riverfront project. ....

The privatisation transaction worth over a billion dollars of two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fired power plants has been delayed further as the government has not been able to resolve issues of income tax exemption and debt financing over the past two years.
Various government departments have been holding a series of meetings to resolve the issues raised by the financial advisers and prospective bidders for taking the transaction to the bidding stage. But progress remained painstakingly slow, said officials in the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Privatisation. ....

When a friend of Mullah Latif sold his old bicycle for Rs 65, to pay the college fees of a needy student, Latif was alarmed. He gave a brand new Hercules bicycle to his friend against a monthly installment of Rs 10. His friend initially thought it was the monthly rent, but for Latif it was an installment.
After 16 months, Latif told his friend that he had paid the whole amount. The issue was settled amicably after it was agreed that Latif would remain the owner while his friend would continue to use it for free. Years later, after Latif had died, his friend returned the bike to his son, Aziz. ....
