WALK THIS WAY: A wander in the Angus glens

WALK THIS WAY: A wander in the Angus glens

Corwharn, Glen Prosen, Angus
THERE’S always a child-like sense of excitement when you follow a path without being exactly sure where it will take you.
The path signed by the old, weathered wooden post with the faded lettering across from Glen Prosen Church isn’t marked on some maps, but it promised a passage to Cormuir from where I could do a short hill circuit on the western side of the glen.

The path sign opposite the cottage, Glen Prosen.
Once through the pedestrian gate, I crossed the wooden bridge over the lively Prosen Water to turn right into the trees. The neglected feel of the path was emphasised as it ran alongside the water with a bit of dodging about, a combination of collapsed fence posts due to embankment erosion and fallen trees and branches. ....

The mercury had dropped below zero and the wind had a ferocious bite, but within minutes of leaving the car I knew this was going to be a good day out.
As I made my way along the iron-hard track, I had company: two birds of prey, effortlessly circling overhead, dark silhouettes against the burgeoning light breaking over the landscape.
They vanished as quickly as they had appeared, but the mood had been set. Their silent elegance was an instant tonic, a good omen for this walk. ....

The Airlie Memorial Tower on Tulloch Hill at the foot of Glen Prosen is a familiar landmark from miles around, but the climb to it is all too brief, writes
Alan Rowan.
When combined with a lower-level circuit around the nearby village of Cortachy, however, it provides a satisfying walk packed with history and mystery which will keep the young ones entertained.
The small woodland car park about a mile up the Prosen road from Dykehead is the starting point. On the bend just before the entrance, there is the impressive Scott-Wilson monument. ....

WALK THIS WAY: A chilly trek to Cat Law, Glen Isla, Angus

WALK THIS WAY: A chilly trek to Cat Law, Glen Isla, Angus

The sky was a flawless blue which accentuated the contours to a sharpness matching the bitter chill of the wind as I headed along the ice-coated road beneath Balintore Castle
writes Alan Rowan.
The target was Cat Law, that bare, rounded hill some six miles west of Kirriemuir. Standing at a height of 678 metres (2,201 feet) it’s the lowest of the handful of Angus hills that qualify as Grahams (hills between 2,000-2,500ft), but it still dominates its closest neighbours.
It had been 13 years since I was last on its summit, and on that occasion I had taken the route from Glen Prosen, combining it in a bigger circuit with nearby Corwharn, now stripped of its place on the list after a new survey found that it fell short of the magic mark. ....
