The environment it lives in is challenging, and there are numerous threats, both natural and manmade. Today many tortoises live in preserves. Stunning imagery captured by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s satellite 22,300 miles in space shows massive plumes of smoke and heat signatures from the wildfires blazing in Northern California, including the enormous Dixie Fire.
The high-resolution imagery which was overlaid with thermal imagery to show the wildfire hot spots was captured from NOAA’s GOES-17 satellite on Tuesday between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., said John Leslie, a spokesperson for NOAA’s Satellites.
