Four fire departments responded to the northeast side of Battle Creek Friday night after residents at an apartment complex were forced to evacuate from a fire. The Pennfield Township Fire Department was the first to respond to Bailey Park Apartments on Capital Avenue Northeast May 21 st around 9 p.m. The fire was seen from the balcony of a second-floor apartment. Crews then entered to evacuate the residents. The flames eventually spread to a third-floor apartment, which was unoccupied. Get our free mobile app The damage was contained to the second- and third-floor balconies and a portion of the third-floor apartment. No one was injured. Heavy smoke and water damage was sustained throughout the 12-unit building. Residents occupied 11 of the units are are being assisted with shelter at this time. What caused the fire is still under investigation. ....
APARTMENT FIRE: Residents of 11 units at Bailey Park Apartments, 1417 Capital Ave. N.E. were displaced by a fire reported just before 9 p.m. Friday. Pennfield Township Fire Chief Tim Smith said it appears the fire began on a second floor outside balcony in building 1411 and burned up the side of the building and into the attic. When the first firefighters arrived, we had fire showing up the outside of the building and into the eaves and this side of the roof, Smith said. Alex Lee Tafoya and Ceanna Long live in the building and saw the fire as they returned home. A chair was in flames, Long said. She called 911 and Tafoya went inside and woke the woman in the second floor apartment. She didn t know, Tafoya said. Other residents said people were shouting fire inside the building as people evacuated. Smith said no injuries were reported. A third-floor apartment which was vacant sustained the most fire damage.
